Flanges are an integral part of many engineering and piping projects. Used in the transportation of oil, gas, water, etc. pipelines, ships) and their manufacturing facilities, as well as in power generation, chemicals, fertilizers, and many other different fields, flanges come in a variety of types and shapes, and their materials are diverse depending on the type of fluid and the environment in which they are used mild steel, low alloy steel, stainless steel, high alloy steel, non-ferrous steel, etc.).
In many applications, engineers need to find a way to close a chamber or cylinder in a very safe way, often because the composition or pressure of the internal material must be different from the external material. They do this by attaching two pieces of metal or other material to a lip with a ring of bolts. The "lip" is a flange.
You can join two sections of metal pipe together by brazing or welding, but pipes joined in this way can easily burst under high pressure. A safer way to connect two sections of pipe is to use flange ends that can be bolted together. This way, even if a gas or liquid builds up high pressure inside the pipe, it usually holds without problem.
Advantages of flanges
Even if you can find specific applications where flanges and fittings are the only practical option, flanges offer benefits to piping systems that traditional hydraulic fitting types do not. For example, in larger OD applications, flanges often cannot be more easily attached to pipe and component ports than adapters or threaded fittings. Most importantly, in the most demanding service applications, mobile construction equipment flange connections are suitable for.
1. If traditional flange fittings are installed, wrenches may have no clearance and are easily assembled in tight spaces. They are easier to assemble with moderate torque.
2. In hard-to-reach areas where flexibility is needed, you do not need adapters in hoses, pipes or tubes.
3. Pipe connections, tubes or large hose connections where high pressure, vibration or shock stresses exist, they may be more likely to damage traditional large hydraulic fittings.
4. Making connections can be easily maintained in rigid piping such as metal pipe or continuous piping.
5. Reduces the likelihood of component loosening in rigorous hydraulic applications.
Using flange connections in high pressure environments and larger sizes allows for easy assembly of overused larger fittings. Flanges with zero clearance components are easy to reconnect and disconnect to maintain hose, manifold and pipe connections can be faster and provide the ability to torque bolts more accurately than trying to achieve the proper torque for larger fittings. When there is proper clamping load distribution around the flange head, flange fittings and flange connections are less likely to loosen compared to standard hydraulic fittings. You can think of it as bolting the wheels of your car to the brakes or hub drums. If the lug nuts are not tightened, the star tread wheel will not tighten and stay connected. This may cause the brake drum, rotor or disc to warp.
